INMGT 565: Project Management
Individual Charter:
For this assignment, I had to create a project charter for a fictional Computer Support Network. The project charter really delves into the innermost workings of a project and gets you thinking about what you need to know before carrying out a project. For this assignment, we were given some details about the project beforehand. Then, we had to use the information that was presented to us to make a the charter. I learned so much through doing this project. I never would have considered half the parts of the project that are necessary to include before working on this assignment. It gave me a good look into what is needed in a project and just how important is it to give adequate details before you start.
Microsoft Project Demo:
Microsoft Project is a very extensive project management software tool that we used in my Project Management class. In this assignment, I learned how to create a Work Breakdown Structure, view a Gantt Chart and add days and information. In this assignment we were graded on our ability to navigate through Microsoft Project. In later assignments, we were graded on using the more intricate workings of the software.
Microsoft Project Practice Exercise:
In this assignment, we were graded on our ability to use some of the more complex functions in Microsoft Project. I learned how to add resources, level a project, baseline a project, allocate funding and view data in a variety of reports. This assignment tested us on our ability to perform these functions and save the data in a correct form. I learned a lot about Microsoft Project in this class and I know it will be a valuable tool if I am working as a Project Manager or have to manage a project one day.
Implement Assignment:
The implement assignment taught me about “crashing” a project and how allocating activities and splitting up duties can either speed up or slow down a project. Crashing a project is when you put more money and resources into the project in order to get it done faster. In the assignment, we used formulas in order to determine which aspects of the project were the most and least expensive to crash. After that, we had to use Microsoft Project to determine how switching around resources would effect the outcome of the project. We were presented with a few examples and we had move the deadline of the project up without making the cost go up. That was good resource allocation practice. This assignment was good practice for me in case I need to know how to crash a project in the future.
Graduate Project Final Presentation:
In my Project Management class, the other graduate student and I were required to do an additional project. We chose to do a food drive at UW-Stout. Our project deliverables were a Project Charter, Microsoft Project Plan and our Powerpoint presentation to the class. In addition that, we had to manage the entire project from start to finish with duties like, can collection, bin placement, hanging posters, food tally, food recording and delivering the items to Interfaith Food Pantry in Menomonie. This was a really great project to run and I think my partner and I would both agree that we learned a ton. Since this was an actual project we were running, we learned first hand what things can go wrong, how to revise them and how to move on with the project in order to avoid delays. The Powerpoint presentation that is my artifact details out our project from start to finish and touches on the main parts and milestones of our project. This was a great learning experience and I know that my partner and I will both benefit and have become better project managers because of this class.
