Competency 1: Discuss the historical, philosophical, sociological, psychological, multicultural, and political influences of ICT on a global economy.
Competency #1 Reflection:
For this competency, I chose to use my paper on globalization and cell phone use in Africa. This paper covers a brief history of ICT use in Africa and the philosophical, sociological, psychological effects of cell phones in use there. In addition, I focused on the political implications and touched on the multiculturalism that cell phone influences make on the society and economy. This paper was challenging and and I hope is full of insights into a third-world country just trying to advance itself globally. I learned a lot and this paper really gave me a global look on the effects of ICT which differs greatly from my usually local or national views on the subject. |

Competency 2: Analyze current issues and trends in ICT.
Competency #2 Reflection:
I chose my research paper that I wrote about Second Life for this competency because I feel it adheres to the requirements on multiple levels. Information and Communication Technology is such a broad, vast field so picking a current trend can be hard. However, Second Life has seen a huge rise in the number of users and multiple user virtual video games are seeing more users now than ever. This paper looked into the trend of Second Life and analyzed possible uses for the future. Uses in e-learning, e-commerce and e-business are all on the rise and Second Life does not seem to be slowing down. This trend is one to watch in the future. The paper I wrote on Second Life gives a good background on the virtual world and suggests possible uses in education. |

Competency 3: Relate how the information society affects global social transformation.
Competency #3 Reflection:
For this competency, I chose to use my semester-long blog that I wrote and updated for my class, Communicating Strategies for Emerging Media. Throughout the course I read articles relating to information society and I think most of my posts focused on a changing society. My focus was usually on my experiences but I think most of my posts can be related to a global society. The information and communication technologies and communication styles I spoke about in my posts can be applied to a variety of different areas. This online blog was an interesting experience for me. I had never blogged before starting the course and there was a bit of a learning curve trying to get used to blogging. However, once I settled in, I found that using photos, videos and links were a great way to enhance the text. This blog made me think critically about what I was reading and apply my knowledge and what I read to the world around me. |
Competency 4: Plan, evaluate, and revise ICT systems.
Competency #4 Reflection:
For this competency, I chose to use my research paper titled, Newspapers in America: Is this the death of the free press? This paper takes a comprehensive look at the newspaper industry in the United States. The research looks at what newspapers in the United States are currently doing to stay alive and provides recommendations for thing other news papers can do to increase readership and revenue. This paper evaluates the current state of the newspaper industry and looks at some of the ways newspapers are surviving in this tough economy. Through my research, I found suggestions and possible was to revise the newspaper as an ICT system. My one regret to this research was the fact that I was not able to actually send out the surveys and complete the paper. The class I wrote this for only required me to work through Chapter 3. Given more time and available funding, I would like to carry out this research to see how current newspapers are surviving. I think it would be an insightful look and I could provide a plan for revising this ICT system. |

Competency 5: Evaluate and use ICTs appropriate to one’s own career.
Competency #5 Reflection:
As a public relations professional, it is my job to create press kits or press kit pieces on a weekly basis. It seemed only fitting to use my knowledge and skills in this area to create a computer based training module. Learning and working with the CBT allowed me to see how useful it can be in the industry and got me thinking about other training modules that my coworkers and I could benefit from. This is a tool I can use to share with the other offices of Wisconsin Public Radio and it can be a useful tool to give to interns when they begin training. This project helped me think of other topics and areas that a CBT would be useful. For instance, creating press releases, writing and cutting promos and a general Wisconsin Public Radio informational CBT. The possibilities are endless and using CBT’s within my current career is definitely something I am going to do. |

Competency 6: Analyze the philosophy and principles underlying the organization and operation of ICT enterprises.
Competency #6 Reflection:
For this competency, I chose to use my powerpoint on the future of Collaborative Computing. Collaborative Computing is a cornerstone of the ICT field and this thoroughly researched presentation analyzed the philosophy and principles behind Collaborative Computing. In addition, I provided real future solutions to some of the current Collaborative Computing issues of the day. The one thing I wish that I could have improved upon was experimenting in each of the recommended virtual worlds. I only explored one of them and used research on the subjects for the other two virtual worlds. However, the powerpoint would have enhanced if I could have spent more time discussing the individual virtual worlds. In any case, the principles behind using virtual worlds for collaborative computing remain the same and I believe my powerpoint did a good job exploring those. |
Competency 7: Interpret and conduct research to improve the body of knowledge relating to ICT.
Competency #7 Reflection:
For this competency, I chose to use my paper, Wikipedia: Reference Tool for the Future? Because I conducted research on this topic. This paper let me explore the world of information gathering through researcher’s eyes. I learned a lot by interviewing faculty and students and used the data I gathered along with my review of literature to add to the body of knowledge that already exists for Wikipedia. I think my research was important and since Wikipedia is still a fairly new entity, there has not been that much research done on it yet. The discussion section of my paper had suggestions for further research and I think there is still a lot of data to gather, things to learn and opinions to be shared on the topic. |
